Is the Art of Telling The Truth a Lost Cause?

Everybody at some time or other makes an excuse, tells a lie, or if it sounds more palatable, gives a “reason” for doing or not doing something.

What is it about us, that feels the need to “save face” which induces us to engage in un-wholesome behaviors? What causes shame or makes us feel unworthy? Why are these thoughts even present in the first place? I don’t claim to know the answers, but what I do know is that every single one of us has been guilty of this behavior.

I am not throwing stones. Heaven knows I’m guilty as accused. Yes, and I do admit it. I am simply trying to understand our human make-up. I’m doing this without any scientific research. This is simply my observations . I share thoughts and ideas with you and you may do with it what you will.

Sometimes a lie can glide off our tongues so easily that I’m surprised at the acumen and quick thinking that allows for that to occur. Have you ever been invited to an event, and instead of simply saying, “thank you, but I don’t wish to attend,” we glibly say we have some other thing to do, or in some cases we might even feign sickness. Where does that come from?

Why are we so afraid of the simple truth?

If we have screwed up, we become embarrassed by our miss-steps, and so we lie about it.

Who among us is perfect?

Interestingly enough we encourage our children not to lie, and in the same breath, we unconsciously encourage them to do the very thing we don’t want them to do.

Do as I say, not as I do. This is a quandary.

My invitation to you today, should you choose to accept the challenge, is to be honest. Say what you mean and mean what you say. It is a small step towards self-respect, and the openings for clearer communication.
